Chiesa a Varena
Surrounded by forests, fields and complete stillness.
Set on a 12 hectare organic farm in the hills of Val di Sieve, Chiesa a Varena offers a quieter way to experience Tuscany.
Just 45 minutes from Florence, it is for those who want to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with nature in a home immersed in the surrounding landscape.
During your stay, you can take part in everyday farm life, from olive picking in November and lavender harvesting and transformation in July, August and September or simply spend time walking the estate and settling into the pace of the countryside.
A restored home, thoughtfully designed
At the centre of the estate is a historic building, once a church built around 1200 A.D., now carefully restored using natural and eco-friendly materials.
The house combines rustic character with modern comfort. A ventilated roof keeps the space cool in summer and insulated in winter, while large windows, a fully equipped kitchen and open living areas make it easy to settle in.
Even the details reflect the intention behind the space, from handmade natural cleaning products to design choices that prioritise harmony with the surrounding environment.

A farm shaped by nature
Olive groves, chestnut trees, and fields are cared for using ecological practices that prioritise biodiversity. Wild herbs are left to grow between the trees, attracting pollinators, while the land is managed seasonally, from pruning in early spring to harvesting in autumn.
You can experience this firsthand, whether through olive oil making or seasonal workshops like lavender harvesting. It is not structured as an activity, but something you naturally step into during your stay.
----
Remote and intentional
Set on top of a hill, surrounded by woodland and open land, the space feels completely removed.
You are the only guests here, with your own entrance and enclosed outdoor space. There is no pool by design, but the natural shade of trees and the way water is used across the farm reflect a different approach, one that prioritises the ecosystem over convenience.
Everything here is carefully considered. From rainwater collection to renewable energy and permaculture practices, the way the space is run is shaped by long term care rather than short term comfort.
Story Behind Chiesa a Varena
In 1964, Anna’s parents purchased the farm, a place that at the time had no water or roads. What began as a simple piece of land slowly became a home, built through years of care and patience.
In 2018, the farm was entrusted to Anna, who continued what had been started. Guided by her deep connection to nature, she now cares for the land as its gardener, focusing on protecting and working with the environment while sharing her home with travellers from around the world.
