Wild Nature Trips
Into the wild corners of Sumatra
Wild Nature Trips creates tailor made adventures across North Sumatra, from orangutan jungle treks in Bukit Lawang to volcanoes, lakes, beaches and local communities across the island.
Whether it is birdwatching, slower trekking, vegetarian meals deep in the jungle or travelling with an experienced local guide, trips can range from a single jungle trek to fully customised journeys adapted to different interests and travel styles.
At the centre of it all is Sumatra’s rainforest, experienced through a more respectful approach to wildlife and the people who live alongside it.
Treks led with respect for the forest
Wild Nature Trips focuses on low impact trekking practices designed to protect the ecosystem visitors come to experience.
Treks operate with a zero plastic and zero palm oil policy, while guides maintain respectful distances from wildlife during encounters. The approach is centred around observation rather than interaction, allowing the jungle to remain as undisturbed as possible.
The team also includes naturalist guides specialised in primates, birds, reptiles and mammals, offering a deeper understanding of the rainforest beyond simply spotting orangutans.

Led by the Community
Every guide, cook, driver and lodge owner involved in the experience comes from the local community.
By working entirely with local teams and suppliers, Wild Nature Trips helps create alternative sources of income connected to conservation rather than deforestation.
One example is their support of locally produced artisanal coconut oil as an alternative to palm oil production, helping create livelihoods that do not rely on clearing rainforest land.

Conservation at the core
Wild Nature Trips is the only trekking agency in the region led by a biologist while operating zero plastic and zero palm oil treks as a standard practice.
The company was created through years of working directly within the Bukit Lawang community, combining conservation knowledge with local relationships built over time.
Allowing travellers to shape the experience around what matters most to them, whether that means a slower pace, specialised wildlife interests or combining the jungle with wider experiences across North Sumatra.
Story Behind Wild Nature Trips
Wild Nature Trips was founded by a biologist, Cloé, who moved to Bukit Lawang and became closely involved with the local community through conservation work, teaching and daily life within the village.
After years of working alongside local residents, one thing became clear, while tourism around orangutan trekking was growing, truly ethical agencies rooted in wildlife conservation and community benefit were still rare.
Together with the local community, Wild Nature Trips was created to offer a different model, one where conservation, local livelihoods and tourism could support each other rather than compete.
