The experience is led by Gede, who grew up in the very village where the journey begins. As your host and guide, he opens the doors to his family home, introducing you to daily routines, traditions and stories that most visitors never get to see.
Wake with the sun, help prepare meals, cut wild grass, feed the cow and wash away the day in the local river. You’ll trek to a village waterfall, learn how arak and palm sugar are made from scratch and sit down for a shared Megibung feast with Gede's family.
This experience is about participation, not performance. You’ll listen, learn, share stories and build real connections through everyday moments.
Away Wanderlust was created from a simple idea: if visitors are going to experience Bali, they should experience it as it’s truly lived.
Gede, who grew up in a remote village in East Bali, wanted travellers to see the Bali he knows, shaped by family, tradition, and everyday rituals, after receiving his father’s blessing, the village priest, he opened the doors of his own family village home to visitors.
Built and led entirely by locals from the village, every cent goes directly back to Gede’s family and community, helping keep traditions alive and livelihoods thriving.
My daughter and I did the caning sari offerings workshop . Both Mira and Gede taught us so much about the different flowers and what they represent it was such a beautiful experience and although I’ve been to Bali 10+ times I learnt so much more about Balinese culture and traditions with this beautiful workshop and love that the Away team are so dedicated to preserving Balinese culture .. Gede also assisted us with transport during our stay and was always happy to help out with our needs . Reno and Erba who drove us around were friendly and we really enjoyed getting to know everyone .. we are missing them all already 🌴
I highly recommend this tour to anyone heading to Bali. You will experience the real daily life of the people here. Gede, Mira, and their family are the most welcoming people and will ensure you enjoy your time with them. I loved it!
What a time we had with Gede, Mira and his wonderful family... unbelievable! If you are looking for an original perspective on Bali, this is it! Its hard to put in words, what we experienced last weekend, but we started to understand this island, its people and the culture that is rooted so deeply within it. Besides all the insightful, amazing, interesting, exhausting, drunk or tasty activities we mostly enjoyed just hanging out with Gede and Mira and chitchat. We have nothing but love and respect for this humble and kind family! We will come back for sure and cannot recommend this highly enough to anyone who is curious. Suksma!
