Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel
A boutique stay along Mozambique’s coastline
Nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean, overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of the last remaining pristine marine ecosystems in the region, sits Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel.
Made up of a small collection of suites and rooms, the hotel and spa combines ocean views, personalised hospitality and a setting that feels closely connected to nature.
Waking up to the islands shimmering on the horizon, with the beach at your doorstep, is something that never gets old. Experience a corner of the world that still feels genuinely untouched.
Experience the archipelago
Guests can explore the Bazaruto Archipelago through snorkelling, diving and island excursions or spend time discovering Vilankulo through cultural tours and slower experiences connected to daily life along the coast.
Whether out on the water, exploring the islands or returning to the hotel overlooking the bay, the pace here is designed around slowing down and spending time with the surroundings.
----
Low impact by design
Bahia Mar is proud to be the only Fair Trade Tourism certified property in Mozambique, reflecting a long term commitment to responsible tourism within the region.
From planting a tree for every guest stay to supporting mangrove restoration and seahorse habitat conservation, the hotel continues to invest in protecting the ecosystems surrounding the bay. Waste is sorted and recycled, gardens are designed with water sensitivity in mind and the property holds a carbon scoring designation.
----
Local hospitality
Guests are known by name and welcomed by a team made up almost entirely of local staff from Vilankulo and the surrounding communities.
The hotel also works closely with local farmers, fishermen and small businesses, sourcing locally wherever possible while continuing to invest in staff training and long term opportunities within the community.
From the spa to island excursions, the focus is on helping guests connect more deeply with this corner of Mozambique through its people, coastline and surrounding nature.
Story Behind Bahia Mar
In the final years of Mozambique’s civil war, founder Paulo Zucula, a Mozambican local, first arrived on this stretch of coastline with plans to start a sustainable cashew nut farm.
Years later, after helping develop Vilankulo’s first conference centre and rebuilding following Cyclone Favio in 2007, Paulo returned to the project with a deeper intention of creating a place that would allow people to experience this part of Mozambique more thoughtfully.
In 2014, marine biologist Susana Vidal joined the project as General Manager, bringing a strong focus on nature, conservation and responsible tourism.
Together, they built Bahia Mar into more than just a beachfront hotel, creating a place that remains deeply connected to the coastline, community and ecosystems around it.
