Respect for nature
The team works to minimise waste, reuse materials where possible and keep the property's footprint small. Energy comes from renewable sources, while day to day decisions, from cleaning products to food sourcing, are made with the surrounding environment in mind. By encouraging visitors to stay longer, travel year round and explore beyond the main tourist season, Yttersia Base also helps support local businesses and communities across Senja throughout the year.
Story behind Yttersia Base
Yttersia Base was founded by Markus, who was born and raised in a small fishing village on Senja and is one of the few local guides from the area.
Growing up between the mountains and the sea, the outdoors became a central part of his life from an early age.
After years away working in finance and renewable energy, Markus felt drawn back to Northern Norway with a desire to create something meaningful in the place he calls home.
We had a wonderful stay in the cabins. They are newly opened and absolutely beautiful, very clean and thoughtfully designed. The cabins are also equipped with kitchens, which makes the stay even more comfortable.
The host was extremely kind and welcoming. We especially enjoyed the snowshoe hike with him, which was a real highlight.
It’s also good to know that there is a 24/6 store nearby, so getting supplies is easy.
Overall, a great experience - highly recommended!

I stayed with my girlfriend at Yttersia Base, and we had a wonderful experience.
Regarding the accommodation, the rooms were very clean and equipped with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay, offering excellent value for money. The check-in process was also very simple and smooth.
In addition to our stay, we went on a snowshoeing excursion with Markus. It was a unique and well-organized experience, featuring a beautiful route with breathtaking views. Markus was extremely kind and incredibly helpful in organizing every aspect of both our stay and the excursion. The snowshoeing trip with him was truly enjoyable.
While talking with him, he told us about the many other activities he organizes, both in winter and summer. For this reason, I believe that a stop at Yttersia Base and an outdoor experience with Markus is an absolute must if you are in the area (and it’s definitely worth going there just for that!).

Our experience with Yttersia Base was truly one of the highlights of our entire week in Norway.
From the very beginning, everything was handled with care and precision. Markus and his father met our group right at the express boat drop-off point in Lysnes. Markus’s father then drove us to Yttersia Base to collect our gear and introduce us to our guide, Salomé. The logistics were seamless and immediately made us feel welcome and well looked after.
The snowshoeing tour itself guided us from Skaland up to Husfjellet. Although the weather was intense at times, we were always in very safe and capable hands. The route took us through forested terrain and then above the tree line into what felt like completely untouched territory. Experiencing nature at that level was truly unmatched.
At the summit, Salomé surprised us with chocolates and hot chocolate, which was absolutely perfect after the climb and made the moment even more special.
After descending, she invited us to join her at Yttersia, avd av Senja Frivilligsentral og Retro bruktbutikk — and I am so glad we did. There, we experienced true Norwegian community and friendship over coffee, tea, cinnamon rolls, and Norwegian waffles with fresh jam and brown cheese. It was to die for. We shared laughs, had great conversations, and learned so much about local life and culture.
Once the day concluded, Markus’s father picked us up again and dropped us back at the express boat, which took us to Tromsø, where we were staying during our time in Norway.
A special note about Markus: he is incredibly detail-oriented. He clearly explained how to prepare, which express boat to take, when and where to be, and what the day would look like. Everything felt organized and stress-free.
For future guests: we booked this tour through GetYourGuide and purchased the express boat tickets separately. This was easy, affordable, and not a hassle at all. The express boat was enclosed and very fast.
Overall, Markus and the entire team made this one of the most memorable activities of our trip. I would absolutely love to return and experience everything else Markus has to offer, and I can’t wait to see his continued success.
